Portsmouth, NH - Women Singing OUT! celebrates marriage equality with “Standing on the Side of Love” on Saturday, June 1st at 7:00 PM and Sunday, June 2nd at 3:00 PM at Christ Episcopal Church at 1035 Lafayette Road in Portsmouth. With their mission of singing for social justice, WSO! steps into the forefront of a national debate on marriage equality. WSO's previous musical forums have tackled domestic abuse, breast cancer, tolerance and peace.
The concert offers a musical journey through equal love, equal opportunity and equal rights with narration read by award winning novelist Katherine Towler and author, humorist and storyteller Rebecca Rule. WSO! offers contemporary music such as “Pride’s Child” by John Schrag, “You Get Proud by Practicing” by Diane Benjamin and “Simply Love” by Holly Near, along with some audience favorites, such as “We Kiss In a Shadow,” “Astonishing” from Little Women and Fred Small’s “Everything Possible.”
Joining WSO! will be singer-songwriter Diana Hansen singing the title song, “Standing on the Side of Love.” Diana’s partner, Ann Cook, plays violin while WSO sings “Marie,” the story of the court case in California that allowed two young women to attend their high school prom as a couple.
WSO! will premiere a commissioned choral piece by Peter Stewart called “Rain.” Composer Stewart was inspired by the singing of the women in December when they traveled to Montreal. His lyrics explore the symbolism of rain as it nourishes us in our growth. A composer’s lecture will take place one-half hour before both concerts. Mr. Stewart will discuss his process as well as his musical choices for the commission.
Women Singing OUT! is a diverse group of female voices made up of lesbians and friends of the lesbian community who stand up and sing out for social change. It’s members believe that music is a universal language which transcends boundaries.
